The Fifth Element

The Fifth Element

Visual Identity, Illustrations · 2023

The Context

The Fifth Element is a Club of Rome initiative built around a provocation: that humanity's biggest crises won't be solved by more data or more policy alone, but by learning and collective transformation. The platform convenes academics, activists, youth, business leaders, and educators around questions most institutions avoid. They needed an identity that could hold that entire range of participants without defaulting to either corporate neutrality or activist aesthetics.

The Approach

The visual language works through shifting perspectives: layered collages and abstract imagery that invite curiosity before explanation. Organic shapes and references to the natural world ground the identity in the life force the fifth element represents. Typography and composition balance the weight of the Club of Rome's 50-year intellectual legacy with the openness the initiative demands. The system needed to feel as welcoming to a 19-year-old activist as to the head of an institution.

The Impact

The identity launched alongside the initiative's public debut and has since carried across conferences, publications, and digital platforms, including events co-organized with Soka Gakkai, the WEEC Network, and the St. Gallen Symposium. It continues to adapt as The Fifth Element grows.
